One Time Watch! Interesting Story, But a Dull Affair!

FATSO has a winning beginning, but it tapers as it moves towards the middle and concluding act. While the plot had the potential to develop into a captivating experience, it loses focus midway and more so towards the final moments. The impact it ought to create is simply missing. One of the reasons being, why doesn't Ranvir tell Gul the truth about what actually transpired. On the whole, FATSO appeals in bits and spurts. It had the potential, but doesn't quite reach there!

Raja Sen

Tragically enough, the film doesn't stick to the guns the concept inherently offers. The basic idea is a fine one, offering both room for smart humour and murky moral ambiguity, but while Kapoor and his (mostly) competent cast sharply enough conjure up some smiling moments, the film squanders the most potentially thrilling aspects of the idea and leaves us with something half-baked. Things fall into place with ridiculous convenience at the end and yet Ranvir, with a bizarrely breathless soliloquy on loving life, more or less saves the moment. It's a fine performance, and one that deserved a better script around it.

Riveting action movies are a rarity in Bollywood. Action movies that stand out come along once every few years. TEZZ, helmed by Priyadarshan, is one of them. The story of TEZZ is uncomplicated.TEZZ is a good looking thriller filmed with expertise. Loaded with an ingenious premise, thrilling moments and action, Priyadarshan has curved it into a tremendously well-executed motion picture. The film's sole objective is to keep moving at a feverish pace, keeping the spectator completely immersed and entertained with the on-screen occurrences. Sure, there are some unwarranted moments , but the pacing is so breakneck and the cinematography so superior that it's easy to overlook the few unreasonable moments. On the whole, TEZZ is a taut, entertaining action spectacle. Those with an appetite for well-made thrillers should lap it up!

Critic Score: 3.5/5Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama.com
Rajeev Masand

The extent of his involvement on Tezz for one, hardly qualifies as anything more than mere 'filming', given that it's an unapologetic rip-off of the popular Japanese film, The Bullet Train. From leather jackets and trench coats to dark glasses and monkey caps…if only half the budget spent on the trendy wardrobe of the actors in this film had been utilized to hammer out a more sensible script, perhaps Tezz might have been a less stupid film. Tezz has many of the ingredients for an engaging, fast-paced thriller. What it needed was a director to assemble its parts and make them work. Alas, Priyadarshan is content with merely filming.I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for Tezz…awfully boring for a film that promises speed and thrills.

Critic Score: 1.5/5Rajeev Masand, CNN IBN
Srijana Mitra Das

Despite slick action and stunning scenes - bullets ramming underwater into a sunlit stream, a violet flower-bush before a cop-car - Tezz loses speed often. Here's possibly why - director Priyadarshan's oeuvre is putting characters in desperate situations and watching them respond. It works beautifully in comedies - but Tezz needs relentless pushing, not frequent stops pondering over the unfairness of citizenship. You can't run fast carrying heavy baggage - that's why Tezz huffs and puffs a little too much.

Hate story revolves around Kaavya [Paoli Dam] and her transformation from a simple middle class journalist to a sex worker to seek revenge. Kaavya, who doesn't have anything to lose anymore, uses her sexuality as a lethal weapon to rip Siddharth [Gulshan Devaiah] apart by using everyone connected to him one way or another.Movies with such an audacious theme generally ignite debates and HATE STORY is sure to meet with severe reactions. The makers ought to be prepared for some bouquets and brickbats. What makes the movie watchable is the vengeance aspectOn the whole, HATE STORY banks on the age-old vendetta theme, but what takes it beyond the mediocre mark is the cat and mouse game played by the protagonist and antagonist, besides, of course, the bold and provocative scenes that add spice to the proceedings. Though engaging in parts, there's no denying that the second hour seizes your attention, making it a watchable experience.

This Sperm Hits Bullseye!

A youth-centric movie with a humorous theme, VICKY DONOR is fundamentally a romantic comedy between a Punjabi boy and a Bengali girl set against the backdrop of sperm donation. Nonetheless, director Shoojit Sircar takes a light-hearted, optimistic look at the issue, coming up with a film that entertains and enlightens the viewer vis-à-vis infertility and artificial insemination. VICKY DONOR may be a diminutive film in terms of budget and costing, but when you see the issue it tackles, it does not give the impression of being an undersized film. On the whole, VICKY DONOR is a small film with a big heart. The makers have had the courage to bring a diverse issue out in the open, narrating a daringly different story without getting preachy. Witty, funny and also emotional, VICKY DONOR is forward-thinking, progressive commercial cinema which vastly enlightens and hugely entertains!

Madhureeta Mukherjee

Director Shoojit Sircar is back with a bold, first-of-its-kind concept that's taboo. He makes this sperm of an idea swim all the way. He intelligently uses comedy to break mindsets, without embarrassing moments or awkward lines. The film entertains, without preaching sexual moralities or social service. Even the music blends beautifully with the story. The winner here is the script (Juhi Chaturvedi), penned with subtlety, oodles of non-slapstick humour, while sensitizing the cause at hand. However, the lingo gets too Punju at times and the last twenty minutes could do with some editing. It takes a man to make a film like this, literally. Kudos to John Abraham for his brave maiden production. Thankfully, this sperm hits bullseye.

It's unfortunate that the same surefootedness that debutant director Supavitra Babul shows in setting up the narrative, disintegrates into a trite, preachy affair in the second half. The tone shifts when the plot twist is introduced - humiliated by the girl he likes ) for his simple ambitions and modest means, Bittoo takes the drastic decision to shoot pornographic videos toarn big bucks; he arrives in Shimla to secretly film honeymooning couples in hotel rooms. Bittoo Boss is an enjoyable enough ride until it goes off-track.I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for Bittoo Boss. The film tosses around some interesting ideas, but can't seem to make them work as a perfect whole.

Critic Score: 2.5/5Rajeev Masand, CNN IBN
Taran Adarsh

BITTOO BOSS has a fascinating premise, it appears bona fide as well, but not all concepts expand into entrancing fares. One anticipates a skillfully textured rom-com with flesh-and-blood characters, but what one gets to watch are caricatures. The slipup lies in its incoherent and erratic screenplay: the conflict doesn't work, the love story lacks fizz and the drama lacks the power to influence you. BITTOO BOSS is a clear case of unfulfilled promises. In the recent past, most debutant directors have had the courage to charter an innovative pathway. One expects the story and the execution of the written material to leave an indelible impression, but director Supavitra Babul doesn't get it right. Sure, the plot has potential, but the writing is lopsided and tedious and what makes it worse is the indolent tempo at which the plot unfurls. On the whole, BITTOO BOSS is a good opportunity lost.

Critic Score: 1.5/5Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama.com
Madhureeta Mukherjee

Debutant director Babul had an interesting premise to start with, but after the first half, the script is more scattered than sorted. Some caricaturish characters, dialogues with local tadka, and few laughable moments save the day. At a time when sex and 'dirty pictures' sell, Babul scripts a hero who describes sex as 'dilon ka milan.' Ho-hum!.This one had the potential to be an entertainer, but turns out to be a 'bit-too' much.

Housefull 2, directed by Sajid Khan, is 'bigger' than the last film, but not necessarily better. To be fair, you can't use words like 'better' or 'funnier' to compare these films; and asking me which one I preferred out of Housefull and Housefull 2 is like asking me what I'd rather have between a migraine and a hernia. Thank you, but I'll pass.Housefull 2 is for four-year-olds who don't know any better. For anyone with taste, or anyone seeking genuine laughs, there's nothing here. I'm going with one out of five for director Sajid Khan's Housefull 2. I'd rather watch reruns of his TV shows instead; they were pure gold compared to this drivel!

Critic Score: 1/5Rajeev Masand, CNN IBN
Taran Adarsh

If you are one of those who cares less about logic and rationale, but looks at movies that not only entertain, but also act as stress busters, HOUSEFULL 2 should slake your craving in those two hours. On the whole, HOUSEFULL 2 is a madcap entertainer that gets the viewer giggling, yelling, whistling and applauding in his seat and you completely savor the fact that the spectators parked around you too are utterly engaged in the chaos and seeking maximum pleasure from the on-screen happenings. If you are a moviegoer who derives pleasure from loud comedies with over-the-top humor that defy logic at every opportunity, I am sure, you will relish this wacky slapstick. If your idea of watching a comedy is to have a good time at the movies, then HOUSEFULL 2 is especially designed for you.

Sajid Khan's Housefull 2, a grotesque film that seems to have been put together by a particularly sadistic ten-year-old. Look, I have nothing against stupid comedies. The keyword, however, for Khan's films is that he stresses the stupid part much too much, and all at the expense of the laughsHousefull 2 is shamefully bad. So bad that Ranjeet - the rapey villain of yore - who appears in one scene, is the most dignified thing about the film.

This one has all the toppings of a 'Bhatt shocker' - drama, emotion, tragedy and some sex. Once again they push the bedroom threshold - a semi-erotic, steamy scene between two women - every man's turn-on fantasy. Debutant director, (Vishal S Mahadkar), tells the story well, though some scenes are very stretched, and tries too hard to provoke a reaction. A faster pace, more potent dialogues, not to add some more dum in Kunal's voice, and a better background score - would have had greater impact. While this one is engaging, it's not the 'rock' you'd die for.

Critic Score: 3/5Madhureeta Mukherjee, Times Of India
Rajeev Masand

Filmed indifferently, and without infusing the urgency that this kind of plot demands, first-time director Vishal Mahadkar delivers a bore-a-thon of a movie, complete with archaic dialogues and stereotypes for characters. Predictable from start to finish, the movie unfolds at an excruciatingly slow pace, and throws up no surprises - not even the 'twist' in the end, which you will more than likely guess. Even the film's key plot-point - the crisis of conscience that our hero goes through - is treated so matter-of-factly that you can't help wondering if the director was as tuned-off as you are.I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for Blood Money. Watch it if you're having trouble sleeping lately.

Critic Score: 1.5/5Rajeev Masand, CNN IBN
Taran Adarsh

The protagonist and his emotions in BLOOD MONEY are very relevant and relatable. He imagines life like every other man. In fact, anyone who aspires to make his/her life superior would be able to relate to the passion of this guy. However, after an extremely absorbing initiation, after establishing the plot so well in the first hour, the film falters towards its post-interval portions. The typical middle class guy, all of a sudden, starts punching the villain's brawny henchmen, after giving them a good chase. Despite being viciously stabbed. Unexpectedly, from a credible, plausible zone, the film deviates into a hard-to-absorb masala-ridden fare that relies on heroism and intrepidness to prove a point. A persuasive culmination, in keeping with the quintessence of the film, would've only enhanced the impact of the second hour.On the whole, BLOOD MONEY is old wine with a brand new label. A decent and absorbing first hour coupled with soulful music are its aces, although the mediocre, outmoded writing in the post-interval portions leave you a little miffed. At best, a fair attempt!

You know that thing called 'thay-ter' - where people go on stage, speak really loudly, open their eyes wide and laugh uproariously to make their point? Well, 'thay-ter' can be good - but transported to cinema, it can stretch a bit thin. And feature some awkward moments - of which Bumboo has a few. Except for the 'thay-ter' - that wide-eyed overacting with incessant PJs, gay no-jokes, even some vomiting. Peppy background music lifts the bar frequently while cracks on screwdrivers and biwi-chors help. But Bumboo gets shafted by its lapses into lavatory humour - and too much thay-ter for cinema.

Critic Score: 1/5Srijana Mitra Das, Times Of India
Taran Adarsh

BUMBOO boasts of an interesting concept. Unfortunately, the writing is painfully taxing, while the execution is plain amateurish, especially the closing stages of the movie. What also makes the movie-going experience cumbersome is the fact that the scenes are stretched for no reason and the laughs are scarce and forced. A man saves the life of a stranger and lives to regret it... Ideally, the black comedy had the potential to have you rolling in the aisles. But the Hindi adaptation is sketchy and theatrical at most times. On the whole, BUMBOO tries too hard to be funny and that's why it misfires. Besides, a weak script, abrupt conclusion and bizarre characters only go against it!

AGENT VINOD is uber-cool, vastly stylized and has been filmed at panoramic locales across the globe. Also, it's a well packaged secret agent movie. An ambitious script, set in various countries, AGENT VINOD is by far the most credible secret agent movie made in Bollywood. This hi-octane thriller has style and substance, both! AGENT VINOD is a hi-octane espionage thriller with a heart. It is not just brawny and dynamic, but witty and crazy too. Ultra slick and stylish, this desi Bond movie adheres to the formula and succeeds in meeting the humungous expectations. AGENT VINOD has all the potential to develop into a triumphant franchise!

Critic Score: 4/5Taran Adarsh, Bollywood Hungama.com
Komal Nahta

What's Good: The action sequences; the stylized cinematography; the snappy editing. What's Bad: The ordinary story; the unnecessarily confusing script; the lack of an emotional connection between the audience and the protagonist; the absence of chemistry between Saif and Kareena's characters; the laughable climax. Verdict: Agent Vinod is a bold experiment gone wrong; certainly not something that entertains in its entirety. Loo break: A couple. Watch or Not?: Watch it only if you want to see an Indian spy movie. But be warned that it comes nowhere closer to the Bond or the Bourne series of Hollywood films.

Critic Score: 2/5Komal Nahta, Koimoi.com
Raja Sen

If only Agent Vinod were a video game. It has all the hallmarks of a classic So yes, as a game it'd be sensational, and tremendous fun. As a film, on the other hand, Agent Vinod must be termed a disappointment, a slick and well-produced throwback to the spy thriller that feels both overlong and under-conceived. Agent Vinod wants to be funny, and while there is the occasional burst of wit, it's exhaustingly rare. Agent Vinod may be the best looking actioner we've seen, and Sriram Raghavan may be a unanimous choice to hold the joystick, but watching him play this particular game shows him distracted by the window dressing -- and not trying hard enough to save the princess.
