By FNN | May 15, 2011, 4:59am IST
'West is West', the long anticipated sequel to the blockbuster 'East is East' is set for a June 10, 2011 release in India. From the same creative team that brought us 'East is East', produced by Leslee Udwin (BAFTA and multi-award winner) and written by Ayub Khan-Din (Nominated BAFTA Carl Foreman Award and twice winner of Laurence Olivier Award), the film stars Om Puri (BAFTA nominated), Linda Bassett, IlaArun, JimiMistry, Vijay Raaz and introduces Aqib Khan. 'West is West'which has been a huge hit in the UK, where it is currently in its 13th week of release at last comes to India. 52 Weeks Entertainment Inc fresh from the India box office success of Hollywood film 'Source Code',is distributing the film in India. West is West, same family, different country, a lot more baggage. Set 5 years on from EAST IS EAST, the sequel takes the Khan family on a journey from Salford, England to rural Pakistan. West is West is as much the coming of age story of 13-year-old Sajid as of his father, 60-year-old George ('Ghengis') Khan. George, in a last attempt to make a good son of him and teach him to value roots and traditions, decides to pack Sajid off to his first wife and family in the Punjab, whom he had abandoned 30 years earlier. In the process the tables are turned on George when he comes face to face with his own transgressions, and realizes that it is he himself who has much to learn. The music of 'West is West' is a perfect combination of East and West sounds creating a stunning musical backdrop to the film. The trio Shankar-Eshaan-Loy have composed original pieces of incredibly emotive music including songs KaalaDoria, 'Mere Sayaan' and NumaishaanMohobbataan for the film, creating the perfect backdrop for the film that will have audiences laughing, crying and cheering in their seats. Two tracks feature the haunting voice of Sufi Pakistani artist SaeenZahoor (winner of the BBC World Music Award), besides lending his own hauntingly beautiful Sufi music to the film ('AikAlif' and 'Toomba'). Fans of Zahoor can see him in the film, as he performs the tracks in his truly inimitable style. The film also has music of classic 70s British icons Nana Mouskouri, Donovan, and Mungo Jerry, along with some superbly scored original music by multi-award winning UK based composer Rob Lane. ‘WestisWest’has been acclaimed and applauded across international festivals last year winning the audience choice award at the Abu Dhabi International Film festival (Oct 2010). The film has its world premier at a gala screening at the Toronto Film Festival (Sept 2010). It was the opening film at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) (Nov 2010), the London Film Festival(Oct 2010), Berlin International Festival (Feb 2010), and the closing film of the South Asian Film festival of New York (Nov 2010), besides other international film festivals in San Francisco (April), Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand (March). The original film 'East is East' won upwards of 36 international awards (including the BAFTA, Indian Film Festival Award, and Special Prize at Cannes where it played to a standing ovation in official selection of Director's Fortnight). Beloved of audiences around the world, this has been a dazzling cross-over British film, which has also become something of a classic, and is even a set book on the curriculum of some European schools 52 Weeks Entertainment Inc, a Motion picture distribution organization in India has regaled audiences in 2010 across selected part of circuits as per film trade with memorable films from Bollywood& Hollywood films like Ishqiya , Hurt Locker - (Mysore), Inception, I Hate Luv Stories - (Gujarat), Tere Bin Laden - ( All India), Robot- ( CP Berar ), YamlaPaglaDeewana and Patiala House amongst others in circuits like Central Province - Vidharbha, Chattisgarh.
