Kumar Taurani wants to ensure that his son, Girish Kumar gets the ideal launch pad and that's why he has roped in hit-churning machine Prabhu Deva to direct him in his debut film Ramaiya Vastavaiya, a romantic comedy, which is a remake of a Telugu, Tamil, Nepali and a Bengali blockbuster. The film also marks the comeback of Kamal Haasan's daughter, Shruti Haasan as a female lead in Bollywood. Ramaiya Vastavaiya is a simple tale of a 'vilayati' ladka, Ram, going 'desi' to prove his love for the 'gaon ki gori', Sona, but of course there are a whole lot of challenges, the biggest one being her brother to face before he can do so. The story and the treatment instantly take you back to Salman Khan's Maine Pyar Kiya and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya days which is both good and bad because it gives the director a proven pattern to work on but comes with the burden of a set image. However this love story makes the cut and proves itself. A total masala entertainer, Ramaiya Vastavaiya is replete with all the ingredients for the masses -- romance, comedy, drama and action. The first half is funny and keeps you laughing with Ram's (Girish Kumar) silly antics. The second half, though, entertaining tends to drag and go a bit over the top. As far as its lead stars are concerned, they have a sweet chemistry going. Girish is confident and carries his role ably. Shruti looks lovely and does her bit well. Sonu Sood is fantastic as the protective, loving older brother. The rest of the cast that includes Vinod Khanna, Nassar, Govind Namdeo, Randhir Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon and Satish Shah all are good in their respective roles. Given that Prabhu Dheva is at the helm of affairs, he has conjured up a crowd puller that is wholesome and entertaining. Music by Sachin Jigar is hummable and the choreography but of course enhances the music. -- Published on July 20, 2013
