Nautanki Saala! Review

What's Good:
Ayushmann Khurrana -- he's the captain of the sinking ship named 'Nautanki Saala!'; Longest on-screen smooch in excruciating close-up; and Once again nicely blended music.
What's Bad:
Awfully stretched plot and New girl Pooja Salvi's dismissing performance.
Verdict:
Nautanki Saala! is entertaining and funny in parts but often it feels stretched and flat, like champagne without the fizz.
Watch or Not:
Watch if if you like Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunal Roy Kapur, both make the movie watchable. Watch this movie with a light heart, but don't expect to be amused nor drained.

Plot Summary

Ram Parmar (Ayushmann Khuranna) one night meets Mandar Lele (Kunaal Roy Kapur) who is troubled and lonely. It is the story of their bonding and friendship. It's a comedy of errors where all of RP's acting skills are tested to the limit as he improvises his way through a hilarious real life drama, complemented by the loose cannon that is Mandar Lele! The film directed by Rohan Sippy, starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Kunaal Roy Kapur in the lead roles along with Pooja Salvi and Evelyn Sharma.

The story is refreshing; the theater-like treatment (sets, props, costumes) is dramatically different. This is no Shakespearean act, but there's enough drama, demons and devtaas to rival our desi phantoms of the operas.

Like the title suggests, it’s all empty theatrics. Newcomer Pooja Salvi is about as expressive as a sack of grains. And wait, the film also has the unique distinction of capturing one of the longest on-screen smooches in a long time.. shot in such excruciating close-up that you might throw up your lunch.

'Nautaki Saala', pegged as a comedy of errors by its makers. True, a 'comedy of errors' it is, but the errors outnumber the logic (if any) the film has. Watch 'Nautanki Saala' only if you really want to.

Nautanki Saala is a colloquial term often attributed to someone who is overtly dramatic yet amusing. While the film is thankfully not melodramatic, it isn't much amusing either!

Nautanki Saala! is funny in parts but often it feels stretched and flat, like champagne without the fizz. Nautanki Saala! had all the ingredients of a peppy, amiable comedy but this soufflé doesn't quite rise.

Rohan Sippy’s creation shows so much promise and has several moments (even if most of them are featured in its trailer). But the plot seems better-suited for a sitcom episode. As a film the nautanki stretches for too long, saala.

Unfortunately, Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunaal Roy Kapur have no comic chemistry in 'Nautanki Saala'. Ayushmann, puts his heart and soul into this totally average film and makes it watchable. I just hope that it would have been more enjoyable.

Ayushmann Khurrana is an absolute natural. He does not miss a single trick as he sails through the role of the nice guy who takes acting too seriously for his own good. The film deserves full marks for intention, if not for execution. But give me Nautanki Saala! any day after the merciless assault of Himmatwala and Chashme Baddoor!.

It’s no 'Delhi Belly' or 'Vicky Donor', yet it holds its own with some striking performers and wickedly clever humour. If, it's clean, intelligent fun that you are looking for, then 'Nautanki Saala!' is where you need to be headed.

And no one should ever write, produce or direct 'Nautanki Saala', which initially annoys you, then lulls you into slumber, and then deepens the creases on your forehead. Oh no, the bright and bouncy Ayushmann Khurrana has just committed career harikiri.

Nautanki Saala is a small-budget entertainer which entertains, but with mild doses of disdain. Watch this film with a light heart, and don’t expect to get either blown away or emotionally drained by it.

Sippy has a feel for staging scenes, and some are laugh-out-loud. The idea that true love can be found through such a random route is also nice, and lends the film a pleasing slightness. But the nautanki in this film is an on-off thing. I wish there was much more of it.
