Ek Thi Daayan Review

What's Good:
First-half is flawless, and the approaching plot is highly original and unfamiliar.
What's Bad:
Few limp moments where it doesn't spook any horror in you, instead gets predictable; The climax was clearly a disappointing mash-up.
Verdict:
First-half is clearly a winner, while in the second-half -- writing becomes obvious, the surprises disappear, and the big reveal turns a mash-up.
Watch or Not:
'Ek Thi Daayan', despite its many flaws, is endurable because of some fine performances by Konkana and Emran -- So do make time for it!

EK THI DAAYAN is an imaginative and appealing supernatural thriller. The film is placed in a relatable world, with myths about witches expertly intertwined in its absorbing screenplay, something which a spectator can effortlessly identify with. Exceptionally novel and attention-grabbing, it's a first of its kind. Watch it for the sheer novelty it puts on display in its genre!

The film sadly is never greater than the sum of its parts. The makers exploit more than a few age-old superstitions associated with witches, but have nothing particularly new or important to say. It nicely builds up intrigue, but leaves you wanting more in the end.

Ek Thi Daayan throws in a lot of it, though there seems room left for a little more. Impressively though, this is the most unusual Bollywood horror film you might have seen.

This film is far ahead of any of the recent horror films that you have watched. Watch it especially for the performances.

Ek Thi Daayan promises some imaginative chills and thrills, so requisite for the success of the genre. If you excuse the 'done-to-death' climax, this one does make a decent attempt at doing so. Ek Thi Daayan will momentarily lift your spirits!

Woven beautifully between the world of magic, occult and suspense, Ek Thi Daayan, makes for compulsive viewing, providing some spine-chilling thrills at short gaps. The narrative in the first half is almost faultless. But just when you start to relax and flow with the emotions, along comes a scary twist that jolts you back to the edge of your seat. The climax is a bit stereotype of horror/supernatural thrillers but that's a minor hiccup in an otherwise cleverly done film of this genre. Note: You may not like the film if transcendental stuff doesn't move you.

Not only does it defy most preconceived notions that you might have until the lights go out and the supernatural drama begins to unfold, it also leaves you so befuddled by the end of it all that you don’t really know what to make of the film. Is it intriguing enough to sustain audience interest over two hours and a bit? Most certainly. Is it a true spine-chiller? Only occasionally. The riveting parts of Ek This Daayan are far outnumbered by the limp moments. Yet it is worth a watch owing to the idiosyncratic treatment of a done-to-death genre.

This is the sort of creep-fest which is better creating an uneasy buildup than at actually scaring the pants off you, and perhaps it should have stayed goosepimply instead of going for the jugular. Ek Thi Daayan isn't a truly scary film -- though it will provoke nightmares in the young, and I strongly recommend all parents keep their children away from this one. Ek Thi Daayan, therefore, isn't the scariest of horror films. It is, though, smartly crafted, highly original in its approach and a strikingly ambitious effort for the genre. The end is a let-down, but the film remains a fine directorial debut for Iyer.

Ek Thi Daayan starts so well that you are riveted. Just about everything in the first half, with its well-calibrated chills, is just as it should be. The second half is unravel time, and you are then left grasping at thin air. The writing becomes obvious, the surprises disappear, and the big reveal is such a mash-up of so many previous spookfests that Ek Thi Daayan becomes more 'Kab Hogi Khatam'. But while the going is good, so much about this film is so good.

Beginning a fresh trend in horror films, it disappoints solely for its inability to deliver innovation as promised. It is indeed watchable, but only for its first part. However, do not go with heightened expectations presuming a classic, since the second half might dampen your spirits!

In the end, the film's most disappointing thing is its mediocrity in dealing with the supernatural. The supernatural is taken for granted, and it is thrust on you. There is no questioning, and no ambivalence. Even the psychiatrist turns the pages of a dog-eared book about witches. The adult magician’s inner world has no magic.

Overall, the film hasn’t been able to live up to the hype that had been created all along. Technically, it may score, but in terms of content, ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ is way too somber. You may watch the film for the fine show put up by the actors.

This is possibly the best screenplay of its genre for an Indian film. Which may not be saying much, given that the main competition comes from old Ramsay Bros. flicks or more recent Raaz, Raaz 2, Raaz 3.... Still, the film effectively manages to create a plausible, unholy alternate world of dayans and pishach without quite wholly discarding basic human logic. The screen holds your attention. You do feel hungry for more chilling moments and effects that stun you into holding your breath.

Despite some stellar performances and an imaginative story, the lack of technical finesse ruins this supernatural thriller. The narrative falters and fumbles, and swiftly concludes into a senseless war of the good and the bad, with action sequences staged that remind you of a bad school play. This is a classic example of how what could’ve appeared incredible on paper, was lost in translation. ‘Ek Thi Daayan’, despite its many flaws, is endurable because of some fine performances. A tighter non-musical edit and more funds for a technical jazz-up would’ve gone a long way in creating havoc.

Watch this film for its ingenuity and flair. You won't feel as safe around house lizards and women with long plaits. You'll mock your own vivid imagination just the way the end of this film mocks its potential.
