Samrat Tilakdhari(Rajeev Khandelwal) or STD as he is known as is a supposedly, uncommonly observant, ace detective who is summoned to solve the mysterious incidents that are occuring at Mahendra Pratap Singh's (Girish Karnad) mansion. As soon as STD gets there Mahendra Pratap Singhis murdered and thus of course starts the search for the killer in the midst of the myriad characters. For the first time in their very long stint in the hindi film industry Rajshri productions has experimented with a genre that they have never tried before and maybe just maybe they should have stuck to their family dramas! This years 1st detective movie, Samrat & Co, is in dire need of some help itself. This wannabe detective film apes Sherlock Holmes down to the look and feel of the character & though it tries hard to recreate the right atmosphere, and we must give it points for atleast trying and being well, half decent, it doesn't succeed. Samrat & Co is no doubt interesting in bits n pieces but this dilchasp rahasiya ride is not as eventful as it is predictable. Rajeev Khandelwal may not be Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr but he does bring a sincerity and his own touch to the character. Girish Karnad, Mandalsa Sharma, Gopal Dutt, Priyanshu Chatterji, Bhaumik Sampat & Navin Prabhakar are adequate. The rest of the cast, comprising of Indraneil Sengupta, Gufi Paintal, Shreya Narayan, Sujata Sangmitra, Rajniesh Duggal & Barkha Sengupta just seem incidental and wasted. The sad thing about this, 2 star, detective thriller is that it had the potential to be brilliant but misses the mark by a wide margin. -- Published on April 24, 2014
