Go Goa Gone Review

What's Good:
It's hilarious, witty, amusing and thoroughly entertaining. This zombie-mania will keep you rolling over with laughter.
What's Bad:
The last 20 minutes of the film gets repetitive and hence, the laughs that were coming spontaneously till a point become a bit forced at this juncture.
Verdict:
It gives you what you least expect and in ways that you least anticipate.
Watch or Not:
'Go Goa Gone' is a must one time watch. There's also a neat little twist at the end. So don't rush out of the theatres.

Go Goa Gone is full of surprises: it is as if Delhi Belly on acid has strayed into Zombieland. It is anything but a mindless zombie film. It is visceral yet humorous; over the top yet perfectly controlled. Go Goa Gone is only mildly scary, but it is often very, very funny. What works is its refusal to pull back and away from its chosen course. It goes all the way down the path to the bitter end, even at the risk of turning far too jokey to be effective. Pretty much the same could be said of the film as a whole – it’s crazy but cool. It gives you what you least expect and in ways that you least anticipate. That is a rare attribute for a Hindi film.

Go Goa Gone is a must one time watch. Stomping off a naïve horror concept in India, borrowing from a hit Hollywood formula, it is an unabashedly crazy film with Vir Das and Kunal Khemu delivering super performances. Relegated into the premise, the film is an exuberantly hilarious laughter riot that shouldn’t be missed. Honestly, I haven’t laughed this much in a film since Delhi Belly. Take a break from all the morose things in life and catch this one, believe me there can't be any regrets! Had the laugh riot the film induces in the first half persisted obstinately, the film would easily have been invincible!

Go Goa Gone will, hopefully, encourage filmmakers to explore new genres, let go of legacy concepts, and inject some energy into the lackluster, zombified rut of films we seem to be stuck with. For now, takes heart as our survivors use everything from an umbrella to a rocket launcher to take out the walking dead and keep you rolling over with laughter.

Go Goa Gone is positively different from anything you seen before, for the young and restless, it's a great ride. The film will keep you in splits for the most part. What is a little tiring though, is the pace of the zombies, who are a bit too monotonous. However some of the situations in GGG are repititive. Hence, the laughs that were coming spontaneously till a point become a bit forced at some juncture.

The film would have been funnier if the second act hadn't gone into a slide. And also if Khan hadn't played Boris (pronounced, he says with a straight face, Ba-ris) so straight. His slip-in-the-bad-Hindi-cussword is played for a laugh: you know that and you still crack up. Sending up his Russian mobster a little more would have shored up the comic tone of the film. It's left to the three guys to do the job. Good to see Kunal Khemu back in form; Das and Tiwari also have a couple of good moments. There's also a neat little twist at the end. So don't rush out of the theatres.

Directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, both known for their comedies, this 'zom-com', as the film has been promoted, is also a comedy – with generous dollops of bloody-gory-hungry zombies. Go Goa Gone’ is a pleasant watch, and despite the innumerable scenes depicting flesh and gore, doesn't leave one with an urge to vomit. The dialogues are witty and are mostly responsible for invoking a laugh. Sense, logic and sensibility be damned – go 'keel dead peepal'!

The dialogue is urban, contemporary and very current. The writers definitely have a pulse on what's hot at the moment and create the right moments between their characters. There is ample blood, gore, stabbing, shooting, brains being blown up, arms amputated, to make you squirm if you aren’t familiar with the genre. But all of this is presented in a fun, satirical format that never takes itself too seriously. Only if the second half and especially the climax had been better fleshed out, the film would have been exceptional. Go Goa Gone is a drug that takes you on that high, but wears off soon enough before you start tripping.

Half the time I was lost in his prepubescent Convent-school accent, and the other half getting annoyed at the wooden expression. Really, its not called understated. It's just called dumb. Having said all that, Go Goa Gone is a fun watch. There are plenty of innocent-sounding, slow-exploding one-liners, which are funny. Please go watch this movie sans-kids, and you are in for some genuine giggles. And of course, there is a promise-like for a sequel.
