Swades Foundation Presents A Celebration Of Rural India By Vikram Phadnis

Around 70 people including 30 celebrities walked the ramp as designer Vikram Phadnis showcased his fashion line at Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Summer-Resort 2013 on the theme of celebration of rural India.

Ashutosh Gowariker, Anurag Basu, Vaibhavi Merchant, Ekta Kapoor, Ram Kapoor, Sakshi Tanwar, Kunal Kapoor, Neha Dhupia, Poonam Sinha, Vaibhavi Merchant, Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan, Farah Khan, Rohit Bal, Dia Mirza, Jeetendra, Sushant Singh Rajput, Juhi Chawla among others walked the ramp supporting the noble cause.

Phadnis also made it a point to include various common people from Swades foundation who walked with the celebrities.

Phadnis partnered with Swades Foundation, an NGO working for the empowerment of rural India, for his fashion show. He dedicated his line to this cause.

The designer besides focusing on his clothing also had the hall decorated with lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

The title track of 'Swades' playing as the background score added to the look and feel of the evening.

Going by the theme of the fashion line "A Celebration Of Rural India", his collection had rural touch to all the garments that included cotton sarees with embroideries, salwar kameez, khadi kurtas, sherwanis for men and subtle yet graceful lehengas.

The stars added their own bit to the evening while they walked the ramp. Choreographer Farah Khan and designer Rohit Bal did a little jig while Vaibhavi Merchant enjoyed her walk with simple dance moves.

Mekhala Chadar is a traditional Assamese attire, which not everyone knows about, feels designer Vaishali S, who focused on the attire with her collection.

The clothes were traditional yet trendy. Through her collection, Vaishali focuses on different states in the country. She started her journey with Madhya Pradesh then Maharashtra, West Bengal and now Assam. She revealed that her next collection will be inspired by Benaras, in Uttar Pradesh.

Designer Soumitra Mondal revived the magic of old weaving techniques when he presented his collection. He teamed up with as many as 350 weavers, who created fine hand woven khadi silk and an array of jamdani fabrics for his collection. The collection had both traditional and Indian garments in shades of off white and pink. They were all hand woven.

Aditi Rao Hydari, who walked the ramp for designer Payal Singhal, said the collection took her down memory lane.

The actress looked fabulous in a red sharara-legenga and simple red blouse.

Titled Taj, Payal's collection was "inspired by Islamic architecture".

While the textiles were very Indian, the silhouettes were western. The line showcased spectacular silken Sufi falda pants with structured cholis, buttery mul saris with free flowing kurtas, short Anarkali kurtas with voluminous salwars and asymmetric tunic blouses with traditional silk saris in katarva cottons, Benarasi and mul silks. The detailing on the clothes was done with silk, silver, and gold thread as well as filigree or jaali work in trellis patterns.

Vidya Malvade, who walked the ramp for designers Farah and Firdos, says the bridal outfit was so light that she could have danced in it.

The 'Chak De! India' actress looked spectacular in an encrusted pink-purple ghagra-choli and pink net dupatta.

Titled "An Eye Through Bangles", the collection has been inspired by clinking of bangles and the steady rhythm of the looms of Bhagalpur and Varanasi. The garments boasted unique embroidery using bangles, which made the collection innovative. A mix of Indian-Western outfits, the collection also included a black evening dress with paisley borders, a brocade collared top, a swallowtail embellished dress, ghagra cholis and saris.Updated March 26, 2013
